Gangtok Ropeway (Cable Car) is one of the most exciting and popular tourist attractions in Gangtok city. It was started in 2003 and has become a must-visit spot for everyone. It is located at Deorali, which is just about 1 km from the main MG Marg.
This ropeway ride gives you a bird’s eye view of the entire Gangtok town, the deep valleys, and the flowing rivers below. If the weather is clear, you can even see the majestic snow-capped peaks of Mount Kanchenjunga.
The ride is about 1 km long and has three stations: Deorali, Namnang, and Tashiling. You can enjoy the full 1 km round-trip journey to see the beauty of Sikkim from the sky.
Each cable car can carry up to 24 passengers at once. There are no seats inside, so you have to stand and enjoy the view through the glass windows.
It is a perfect experience for families, couples, and photography lovers. Because of its thrill and views, Gangtok Ropeway is a must-visit during your Gangtok tour.

Best time to visit Gangtok Ropeway
Before planning your trip to the Gangtok, it’s important to know how the weather affects the visibility. Since the main attraction is the panoramic view, clear skies are very important for a good experience.
You can enjoy this ride throughout the year, but the views vary by season. Summer and Autumn are considered the best seasons to visit Gangtok Ropeway.
Summer (March–June)
Summer is the best season for the ropeway ride. The weather remains pleasant and the skies are usually clear. The temperature stays between 12°C – 22°C, so waiting in the queue is also comfortable.
In this season, you can see the lush green valleys and the colorful houses of Gangtok clearly. If you are planning your Gangtok trip next year, choose this season for the best photography.
Monsoon (July–September)
Monsoon is not the ideal time for the ropeway. Because of heavy rain, the clouds often cover the valley, and you might not see anything through the fog.
Sometimes, if the wind is too strong or the weather is very bad, the ropeway service is temporarily stopped for safety. Most of the travellers avoid this season because of low visibility.
Autumn (October–November)
After the rains, Autumn is a great time for the cable car ride. The air is very crisp and the skies are at their clearest.
In this season, you have the highest chance of seeing the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range during your ride. The temperature stays between 8°C – 18°C, making it a very refreshing experience. So you can visit in this season.
Winter (December–February)
In winter, Gangtok is very cold, but the ropeway still operates. The temperature remains between 3°C – 12°C.
The views are often very clear in winter, though it can be quite chilly inside the cable car. If you like the cold mountain breeze and clear blue skies, this season will be perfect for you.
