The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a breathtaking botanical wonderland located in the famous Yumthang Valley of North Sikkim.

Spreading over 43 square kilometers, it is situated at a high altitude ranging from 3,048 meters to 4,575 meters. This sanctuary is often called the “Valley of Flowers” of the East.

The sanctuary was established to protect the incredible variety of Rhododendrons, which is the State Tree of Sikkim.

It is home to more than 40 different species of these flowers, including the rare Rhododendron niveum.

During the blooming season, the entire valley turns into a vibrant carpet of red, pink, purple, and white, with the snow-capped Himalayan peaks and the Yumthang Chhu river in the background.

Because of its rare floral beauty and high-altitude charm, the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is the crown jewel of any Gangtok tour.

Best time to visit Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Since this is a high-altitude sanctuary, the weather is very cold for most of the year. The “blooming season” is the only time you can see the flowers in their full glory.

Spring (April–June)

This is the best time to visit. From late April to June, the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. The weather is pleasant (7°C – 15°C) and the skies are usually clear. This is the only time you can see the famous “riot of colors” that the sanctuary is known for.

Autumn (October–November)

After the monsoon, the air is very crisp and the views of the surrounding snow peaks are the clearest. While there are no flowers in this season, the greenery and the mountain views make it a great time for photography.

Winter (December–March)

The entire sanctuary is covered in thick snow. While it looks like a “Winter Wonderland,” the roads are often blocked due to heavy snowfall. The temperature can drop to -10°C.

Monsoon (July–September)

The region receives heavy rainfall, and the North Sikkim Highway is very prone to landslides. Most of the flowers also wither away by this time.
