How to Reach Chopta Valley

Planning a trip during the winter in Sikkim should not be a problem, considering that Sikkim is one of the major tourist attractions in India. Speaking of Sikkim and visiting the Chopta Valley, one must think of how to reach Chopta Valley from Gangtok. From Gangtok, you have one option, and that is taking a taxi or hiring local transport. When you start getting close to Chopta Valley, the cool breeze and the quiet nature give the sensation of the world slowing down just for you.

1. By Road

Getting to Chopta Valley is easy by road, and honestly, the drive is very beautiful too. If you wish to travel by taxi, there are also buses from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun. You get to see plenty of greenery alongside the road, small but cute little villages, and plenty of fresh mountain views along the journey. Chopta Valley is 130 km away from Gangtok, so you can easily reach it by road.

2. By Train or Flight

Though there are no direct trains or flights to Chopta Valley, the nearest railway station is Rishikesh, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun). After that, you just have to get a taxi or a bus to get to Chopta. When you leave the city behind, there is a cool mountain breeze that really makes you feel your trip has already started.

3. By Local Transport

Also, to save some money, you can take the local buses or shared jeeps from Uttarakhand town to places such as Ukhimath or Rudraprayag. The drives might be a bit basic, but they make you feel like you are actually travelling through the mountains. The locals that you will meet along the ride make the journey even better.

Best time to visit Chopta Valley

Before visiting North Sikkim, you must think about what the best time is to visit. It totally depends on you, which type of weather you prefer for your visit. Usually, summer (March to June) is the best time to visit Sikkim for every type of traveller. If you love snow and cold weather, you should visit during winter (October to February). It’s totally your choice, what kind of beauty you want to see, colourful flowers.

Summer (March to June)

In summer, Chopta Valley enjoys bright, pleasant weather. The flowers bloom everywhere, and the weather is cool and comfortable for sightseeing. When I travelled from Gangtok during this season, the roads were clear, and the views were breathtaking. It’s perfect if you want a peaceful and colourful trip.

Monsoon (July to September)

During the monsoon, the whole valley turns deep green, and the clouds move softly through the mountains. It feels magical, but the roads from Gangtok can be slippery and risky. If you visit in this season, go only with a trusted driver and be ready for slow travel.

Winter (October to February)

Winter is the time when Chopta Valley becomes a snowy wonderland. The cold wind touches your face, and the white mountains look truly heavenly. When travelling from Gangtok, the route is open most of the time, but sometimes heavy snow can block the roads. If you love snow, this is the season that will touch your heart.
