Enchey Monastery is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim. It is located on a hilltop at Gangtok. It offers you stunning views of Mount Kanchenjunga.
The name “Enchey” means “Solitary Monastery”. It is an important seat of the Nyingma order of Vajrayana Buddhism. This monastery is famous for its unique architecture, which resembles a Chinese Pagoda.
It was built on the site blessed by Lama Druptob Karpo, a tantric master known for his flying powers. Legend says he flew from Maenam Hill and landed at this very spot.
Today, Enchey Monastery is home of 90+ monks and houses many images of Gods, Goddesses, and religious objects.
The walls of the large prayer hall are covered with paintings and murals. Because of its spiritual vibes and history, Enchey Monastery is a must-visit during your Gangtok tour.

However, if you love lush green surroundings and don’t mind the rain, you can visit. But for general sightseeing, this season is not the best choice.
Winter (December–February)
Winter gives Enchey Monastery a very peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Temperatures drop to 4°C–12°C, so it gets quite cold.
October and November are best with clear skies and crisp air. The famous Detor Cham festival (masked dance) is held in January or February, which is a great cultural experience.
