The Himalayan Zoological Park is the first and largest high-altitude zoo in Sikkim.
It is located in Bulbuley, which is about 3 km to 8 km from the main city of Gangtok (depending on your starting point). It is situated at an altitude of 1,780 meters and spreads over a massive area of 205 hectares.
This park is very different from regular zoos. Because the animals are not kept in small cages, but in large, open, and natural enclosures that look like the forest.
This is why it is called a “zoo with a difference.” If the weather is clear, you can see a majestic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga from here.
The park is famous for the Red Panda, which is the state animal of Sikkim.
You can also see the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Clouded Leopard, Tibetan Wolf, and the Himalayan Monal (a very colorful bird). The park is a paradise for wildlife lovers and bird watchers.
There is a 2.5 km road inside the park. You can either walk to explore the enclosures or take your vehicle inside by paying a fee.
It is a perfect place for families and kids. Because of its natural beauty and rare animals, Himalayan Zoological Park is a must-visit during your Gangtok tour.

Best time to visit Himalayan Zoological Park
Before planning your visit to the Himalayan Zoo, it’s important to understand how the seasons affect animal sightings and road conditions. Since the park is very large and involves walking, pleasant weather is very important.
You can visit this place throughout the year, but clear skies are better for views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Summer and Autumn are considered the best seasons to visit Himalayan Zoological Park.
Summer (March–June)
Summer is the best season to visit the zoo. Because in this season, the weather is pleasant with clear skies. Temperature stays between 10°C – 20°C, which is cool and comfortable for a long walk inside the park.
In this season, the animals are more active and the forest looks green and fresh. If you are planning your Gangtok trip next year, choose this season for the best experience.
Monsoon (July–September)
Monsoon is not recommended to visit the zoo. Because of heavy rainfall, the trails inside the park can become very slippery and muddy.
Also, the clouds and fog make it difficult to spot animals in their large enclosures. Most of the travellers avoid this season because it becomes difficult to walk or drive through the forest area.
Autumn (October–November)
After summer, Autumn is also the best season to visit Gangtok and the Zoo. This is post-monsoon season so the visibility is very high.
In this season, the weather becomes very clear. This is the best time to see Mt. Kanchenjunga from the watchtower inside the park. The temperature stays between 5°C – 15°C. So you can visit in this season.
Winter (December–February)
In winter, it is very cold in this area. But you can still visit if you are comfortable with the chill.
In this season temperature remains between 0°C – 10°C. Sometimes you might even see a light snowfall in the higher parts of the park.
The animals like Snow Leopards are very comfortable in this weather. If you like the quiet winter vibe, this season will be perfect for you.
