Located about 65 km from Gangtok at an altitude of approximately 3,126 feet (956 meters), Mangan is the administrative headquarters of the North Sikkim district and serves as the primary gateway to the most remote corners of the Himalayas.

The name Mangan is derived from the Lepcha word “Maangan,” which translates to “the hidden place.” This name is incredibly fitting, as the town is tucked away in the rugged folds of the Himalayas, overlooking the Teesta River.
The Blood Brotherhood Treaty Mangan’s history is tied to the very foundation of Sikkim. Just 20 km before the town lies Kabi Lungchok, a site of immense spiritual and historical value.
In the 13th century, the Lepcha chieftain Thekong Tek and the Bhutia prince Khye Bumsa met here to solemnize a “Treaty of Blood Brotherhood.”
They swore that the Lepchas and Bhutias would live as brothers forever. Massive stone pillars were erected in a sacred forest grove to mark this bond, and even today, the local people visit this spot to pay their respects to the ancestors who united the land.
The Cardamom Capital Mangan is world-famous as the “Cardamom Capital of India.” The fertile, moist slopes of North Sikkim produce the highest quality “Large Cardamom” (Badi Elaichi).

Mangan is a destination that changes its colors with every season. Since it is at a lower altitude than the extreme north, it is accessible almost all year round, but your experience will vary.
Spring (March–May)
This is the best time for nature lovers. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary and the surrounding forests are in full bloom. The weather is pleasant (10°C to 25°C), and the greenery is vibrant after the winter snow melts.
Autumn (October–November)
This is the peak season for mountain views. After the monsoon rains wash away the dust, the sky becomes crystal clear. You will get the most unobstructed, sharp views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Siniolchu.
Winter (December–February)
It gets chilly (dropping to 4°C), but it remains sunny during the day. This is the time for the Mangan Music Festival in December, where local bands and cultural troupes perform under the winter stars.

The North Sikkim Highway is very prone to landslides during heavy rains. While the waterfalls are at their loudest and most beautiful, the risk of road blocks makes travel difficult.

How to Reach Mangan
Reaching Mangan is a scenic adventure in itself. The road from Gangtok follows the Teesta River and passes through several cascading waterfalls.
By Road
- From Gangtok: Mangan is about 65 km from Gangtok. You can hire a private taxi from the Vajra Taxi Stand. The drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Shared Jeeps: For budget travelers, shared jeeps run daily from Gangtok to Mangan. The fare is usually around ₹250–₹350 per seat.
- From Siliguri/NJP: If you want to bypass Gangtok, you can take the road via Singtam and Dikchu. It is about 140 km from NJP and takes 5–6 hours.
By Flight
The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport, about 90 km away. However, flights are limited. Most travelers use Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal (150 km away), hire a taxi to Gangtok, and then proceed to Mangan the next day.
By Train
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). From NJP, you can hire a reserved vehicle to Mangan or take a shared taxi to Gangtok first.
